Week 1 – 4/5/2023 – Las Vegas Paiute – Snow Mountain

Our first official sanctioned round of the year took place at the magnificent Paiute golf course 30 miles north of the strip. If you are planning a trip to Vegas this is a must play course. If you live here then you know all about it. The practice facility is the best I’ve seen. Two driving ranges, huge practice greens and even a chipping area with a bunker to work on all aspects of your game before the round. They have 3 Pete Dye courses to choose from and they are all always in great shape, with great greens always rolling fast and pure. Today we got great weather, not much wind, and we were playing the Snow Mountain course.

Jitters were high, it was opening day so everyone was excited. We all got off to a good start with 3 pars and a bogey on number one. But of course a big number is always lurking and Pete wouldn’t make us wait too long. It happened at the par 5 third hole. After battling a tough duck hook and some time in Browntown Pete was picking his ball out of the cup carding a 9. The season was officially underway, we had our first big number. Wags had his eye on a 39 until he reached the par 3 eighth hole. After pushing his tee shot right into a bunker, he struggled to get it close and took a double. A par on the 9th hole and Wags was halfway home with a 40. Mike was pounding fairways as always to hang close, but his touch around the greens seemed a bit off. These greens were fast so touch was key today. Tony is the newcomer to the group and he is still adjusting to the way we play and make our way through a round. We always play the “one ups” tees and this week it was just shy of 6700 yards. You mix in that we play it where it lays and we putt everything out and it’s tough to score. There was a few 4 putts today. As we made the turn Wags had the lead and was thinking just maybe a 79 was in play..

First nine scores.

Wags 40
The Chief 42
T-Bone 45
Pedro 46

Unfortunately I have to report the second nine was pretty uneventful. Nobody played great and nobody was awful. There were a bunch of bogeys, a few pars, and the occasional double. I guess that’s how a group of 10-15 handicappers play. I can say the day was amazing and we all enjoyed being outside with friends, the great views, and this amazing course.

The season is underway and we are looking forward to our weekly game and the laughs and competition this great game brings to us. I already can’t wait till next Wednesday.
